The music on this CD was performed on what I call a 'Vertical and Horizontal Alto Saxophone' - This term denotes a new
approach to playing the saxophone, which involves stripping it back - past lines, past reed, past the closed tube with
holes to be opened, past multiphonic manipulation, past the spittle-inflected breath tube, past the adjustable resonating
chamber for feedback, past the hollow, paddded percussion play set. Back to a piece of metal - a conductor for electrical
(audio) signals. The body of the instrument is treated simply as a piece of metal and audio signals are passed through it,
along its length. These signals can be feedback (as with most of the tracks here) or an audio recording (as with Track 2),
passed through the metal of the saxophone.
The saxophone is also contact mic'd etc. to allow for further exploration of the object. This is all usually (although not
necessarily) done with the saxophone laying flat on a table - the Horizontal - but this approach in no way prevents me
from, at any point, picking up the saxophone and playing it in a more conventional way - the Vertical. Sometimes both
occur at the same time (Track 3). The saxophone I play here was made in 1929.
It is important for me to stress that no electrical processing gives rise to this sound; it is purely the instrument itself that
you hear, but stripped back and extended in a new way. This is instrumental music. - Massimo Magee
